Can arborists climb any trees, no matter how tall or difficult ? The answer is yes ! People often think that we use cherry pickers or ladders but this is the old school way that is clumsy and dangerous. We now climb trees using techniques that look like mountaineering with ropes and harnesses, giving us fast safe access to the whole tree, using skill and knowledge rather than brute force. First, we need to get our climbing rope into the tree. We do this by throwing a thin cord attached to a sack of lead weight up into the tree to pass over a high forking branch, attaching our climbing rope and pulling it into the trees.

Global warming

DEAD CHESTNUT TREE, 24250 LA ROQUE-GAGEAC

We are starting to notice the effects of global warming in the Dordogne and the Lot. Warmer temperatures are causing changes in the timing of tree growth and reproduction, as well as increased water stress and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases. Additionally, rising temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns are causing shifts in the distribution of tree species, with some species moving further North or to higher elevations. Climate change is also increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as droughts and heatwaves, which can harm or kill trees.

Regular maintenance

B BRINNAND, RED OAK
FINISHING OFF THE PRUNING, 24370 CARLUX

This stunning red oak stands at 17 metres, but it has the potential to reach over 30 metres. To maintain its beauty and keep it within the bounds of the garden, we carefully trim its new growth using a hand saw and pruning shears. If left to grow unrestricted, it would quickly become too large for the garden and would need to be removed.
