This old oak tree was overhanging a barn that is due to be restored so it needed to be removed. The lean of the main trunk was almost 60 degrees with most of the main branches over the roof with one or two resting on the tiles.
We had to do lots of pulley and rope work to swing the branches away from the barn before they could be lowered safely to the ground.

Trois chênes étaient tombés soudainement, leurs branches touchaient les lignes téléphoniques. J’ai précautionneusement ôté les têtes afin de préserver les arbres autour et coupé le tronc en bûches d’un mètre. J’ai utilisé un système de ? relié à un autre arbre de façon à pouvoir bouger les plus grosses bûches et les placer au bon endroit pour que le tracteur les enlève. C’était sympa de travailler par une belle journée de printemps.

The data in this map comes from a satellite called Landsat, which takes photographs of the earth in red, green and blue wavelengths like our eyes can see, but also a bunch of other wavelengths that are invisible to us (near infra-red, short-wave infra-red, thermal infra-red etc). Essentially, different kinds of vegetation reflect different combinations of all those different types of light, so you can train a computer model to separate the different types of plants automatically!

These maps contains a whole lot of data: over 40 gigabytes! Robbibt used R code to download vegetation layers from the amazing Hansen et al. 2013 datasets, used a median filter to remove noise and spatial Landsat artefacts, and overlaid the map with SRTM 90m resolution digital elevation data in the open-source QGIS software to give a better idea of the local topography!

Ils communiquent, s’entraident, se défendent, ils bougent même ! Les arbres sont dotés d’une véritable forme d’intelligence. Et c’est désormais une certitude scientifique. Cobalt crust fungus
This fungus is called cobalt crust or blue velvet spread, it is a saprobic crust fungus and are more commonly are green, white or brown
Normally live in hardwood forests where it is warm and damp and appears on the undersides of fallen logs and branches of deciduous trees, this amazing fungus has been described as blue velvet on a stick. German police find 275 marijuana plants hidden in trees
Walkers initially found around 35 cannabis plants in the adjacent forest near Haunstetten Germany, A futher 240 were found in trees as high as 25 meters, the pots had been well hidden and it was only the smell from the ground that gave their existence away.
Visitors to the area have been asked not to climb the trees as it is dangerous without specialist equipment, and to just report them to the local police.
An investigation is underway to find the mystery tree top gardeners.

Sarlat : de faux élagueurs arnaquent une retraitée de 1.000 euros
Les escrocs ne manquent pas d’imagination. Cette semaine, une habitante de Sarlat s’est faite avoir par deux hommes qui se sont présentés chez elle comme des élagueurs au service d’Enedis, le fournisseur d’électricité. Ils ont expliqué à cette dame âgée qu’un des arbres de sa propriété devait être coupé. Une fois leur tâche accomplie ils lui ont demandé de payer 1.000 euros. C’était un petit travail pour nous, mais important pour le client. L’arbre était pourri au centre et avait été endommagé par des bourrasques de vent. Il se trouvait au milieu de leur pelouse et ils voulaient que l’on nettoie rapidement le site afin qu’ils puissent à nouveau profiter de leur jardin. Notre élagueur a travaillé soigneusement afin de protéger les rosiers aux alentours, puis il a rogné la souche pour laisser un emplacement vierge.
